People in the Survey Group
The regional distribution of the responses shows a fairly uniform
distribution across the country with a slightly lower percentage
in the western region and a small number who are currently out
of the country. This wide geographical distribution as listed
in Table III reflects the breadth of job opportunities in the field. Major
employers of materials specialists are manufacturing establishments
and these companies are found across the country. Thus, the broad
regional distribution would be expected for the survey group.

Table III
The gender distribution of the total survey group includes about
13% women while the recent graduates in the survey group consist
of almost 28% women as shown in Fig. 2. In the past 15 years there has been a significant increase in
the fraction of the degrees being granted to women. The survey
group included over 12% minority in the recent graduates which
is greater than expected from degree granting studies. The majority
of the women and minorities in the survey group are in materials
type programs both at the bachelors and graduate levels.
